Heritage Breed Poultry & Pigeons!

Heritage and rare breed preservation in New Zealand is a challenge

Strict biosecurity rules, and restrictions around bird and egg imports, make it almost impossible to bring fresh genetics in. When it comes to heritage breeds, we can only continue to breed and work with what we have. Sadly, some breeds are becoming increasingly hard to find – tragically, some have already disappeared completely.

Shows are important

The best way to keep heritage breeds going is by showing them off and encouraging others to keep them. This is where poultry shows and displays come in. Shows are not just about winning cards, rosettes, and ribbons - although that’s great fun! Showing heritage breed birds gets them out in public for people to fall in love with.

We cannot hold a show without cages

Show cages temporarily house our avian superstars at events, keeping them safe as they strut their stuff as Breed Ambassadors. They provide a uniform space to allow show judges to assess them and for the  public to admire them, in their moment of glory, before they hop, skip, waddle or fly back to their home coops, paddocks, ponds and lofts.

Central Districts Poultry & Pigeon Club is on a mission to increase our stock of display cages so we can continue to play our part in breed preservation and encourage the next generation to give it a go. Poultry and pigeon fancying is a wholesome hobby, accessible to many, and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

How you can help

We have found an NZ cage manufacturer who has produced suitable designs. We have secured our first batch of extra-large, shiny new cages, and are looking for sponsors, to help fund the rest of what we need as a Club.

Life Sponsorship. This means ‘life of the cage’ These cages are well-made and should last for many years. Some currently in use at shows are over 70 years old! That is quite the legacy.

We will attach a small plaque naming you as sponsor. The sign can be in your name, or, perhaps in memory of someone special who loved birds.

1 single cage unit, Life Sponsorship $100

Champions Row – Life sponsor $500 per cage

Champions Row – this refers to Champions Row at any North Island affiliated show CDPPC might hold in future. Champions Row usually gets a lot of attention from the public and any visiting media.
